Askren Wrestling Josh Wagner, Mequon, HartlandI’m from the Milwaukee area. I was born in West Allis but grew up in Menomonee Falls until 8th grade. My father was the head wrestling coach at the West Allis/ West Milwaukee wrestling club. That is how I got into wrestling at the age of 4.

I’ve known Ben and Max over 15 years, since our youth wrestling days. We wrestled on a lot of Wisconsin teams together, for duals and nationals. In high school I would come to Hartland on the weekend to wrestle in their basement and to hang out.

I went to Milton High School and we were team state champions in 2002.
High school- 148-6 career record, 4 time conference, regional, and sectional champion. 4 time state qualifier. Took 3rd as a freshman, 2nd as a sophomore, 1st as a junior, and didn’t place senior year haha. I took 7th at Senior Nationals, and was a all american in freestyle and 2 time all american in greco. I won the 2000 cadet greco fila nationals, which qualified me to represent USA in Poland. There wasn’t a world tournament that year so we practiced and had duals with Poland’s national team. College- Earned 4 letters at the University of Missouri. Wrestled at 149 pounds and was a team captain in 2007-2008 season. 2 time ncaa qualifier and had 40 career pins. On the 2007 3rd place team along with Ben and Max.

The thing I love about wrestling is that it is one of the toughest sports. There’s a lot of pride in saying “I am a wrestler,” because of the respect that is given to those that have wrestled. Doing something that seems insane to others is cool to me. Obviously winning is the goal at everything in life, but in wrestling, to compete one-on-one and put on a show for others to see is a lot of fun.

The thing that excites me about coaching wrestling is seeing wrestlers getting better. There are so many levels and everyone is going to progress differently, but seeing improvement is fun. Not everyone will reach their goals, so when it does happen that is really satisfying as a coach.

I was really excited when Ben and Max asked me to come work and coach for AWA. These are two guys I have known for a long time and have a lot of respect for and it is exciting to be a part of what they have going on. It seemed unreal at first because it’s hard not to get excited about the thought of having a job that is related to one of your biggest passions in life. I’m very happy I made the decision to come AWA and look forward to coaching these kids.

My goal at AWA is pretty simple. I want to be the best wrestling club in the nation.
